For me, Scary House is a large culmination of a lot of the things Death to Peanuts has done over the years. We’ve been trying to hone in on a particular style for about two years now. With each little experiment we do, we learn something new. Mostly, we see which of our ideas truly are funny, and which aren’t. This is where Scary House comes in. I wrote Scary House, essentially, as an homage to a bunch of our older sketches. I wanted to take our stupid micro-shorts, and try to develop a story around them. This doesn’t necessarily mean I took the process too seriously. The story that I came out with is definitely just as stupid as the original sketches. But, I do like to think Scary House is something that feels unique. I hope that Scary House can be something sets us apart from all the other student films people normally see.

I’ve come to notice a trend in a lot of my own personal film making. Oftentimes, I feel like I, myself, have little creativity. I tend to siphon off the ideas that we all come up with as a group. Yeti is a great example of this. Years ago, we all came up with the idea of Yeti. It went through a very slow development during all that time, and then eventually dropped off the map. When I knew I wanted to make a film last year, I simply resurrected a lot of the ideas for Yeti, and through a few of my own new ones. I can never decide if this is evidence of just how lazy I am. My defense is always that I enjoy the ideas we come up with as a group. To me, Death to Peanuts is more about our input as a community, rather than our individual ideas. I’ve had to change the way I present this idea over the years. There definitely must be a sense of self within Death to Peanuts, and that’s partly why the website is structured the way that it is. People on the outside should be able to see us as a creative collective, but they should also be able to find a sense of who each individual person is within that collective.

So, while Scary House is based off of many of the ideas we have all generated as a group, it does still resonate with me on many personal levels. So, while I may use the guise of Scary House being film that doesn’t take itself too seriously (and I do honestly believe that it shouldn’t), there is a large portion of it that I am incredibly invested in. My main goal with this film is that, when we do get to the exhibition phase, that I am granted enough avenues to present the film so that people can enjoy the film as much as I’ve enjoyed the process. Not just the process with Scary House, but the process with Death to Peanuts and everything that has led up to Scary House.
